Involvement Period: August 2012 through April 2013
Renew SleepClock is an app that I helped to develop and maintain at Gear4. The app is designed to work in conjuction with the Renew SleepClock hardware, which when used with the app would act as a 'smarter' alarm clock. By using a series of sensors, it is able to monitor the quality of your sleep, and what state of sleep you are in (awake, light or deep sleep), and thus be able to determine the best time within a given time window, in which to wake you up through a gradually ramped up alarm. The idea being that it doesn't jar you awake from deep sleep.
When I arrived at Gear4, the project was already shipping in the US, and so initially my role on it became largely maintainence oriented. I helped to fix bugs and update minor parts of the application. My largest contribution to the app, was to implement a tour feature, which would guide new users through the application, showing them the various features of the application and how to get the most out of it.
Renew resulted in me gaining a lot of experience with how Apple's UI works on iOS, allowing me to determine just how to use it to my advantage, and in some cases, how not to use it.
This project was the first time I had ever had to begin working on something reasonably large, that I had no prior experience with. I had to become familiar with the existing code and be able to fix bugs in code that I had never seen before.
